He is a nationally recognized leader in genitourinary and thoracic oncology and his research focuses on renal cell carcinoma and thoracic malignancies. Dr. Figlin established and directs the Kidney Cancer Program at City of Hope, and will continue to serve as the co-principal investigator of the UCLA Lung Cancer Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE), which he brought to City of Hope as part of the Southern California Lung Cancer Consortium.

He is board certified in medical oncology and internal medicine. Dr. Figlin's studies have appeared in Clinical Cancer Research, the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the Journal of Urology, among others. He serves as editor for the peer—reviewed Kidney Cancer Journal.

His current research involves studying the effects of several targeted drugs at slowing the progression of kidney cancer. These drugs have the potential to inhibit a kidney cancer tumor from growing and possibly even lead to the tumor shrinking which would be a very promising course of treatment for patients with metastasized or recurring kidney cancer tumors in the kidneys and other organs.
